Portrait of Samhan Samhan
In short

I am an Industry PhD candidate at UNSW Sydney, working in partnership with Ausgrid, the electricity distribution network service provider for Sydney, the Hunter and the Central Coast. My PhD is funded by a University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) from UNSW Sydney, with additional support from Ausgrid, RACE for 2030 and the NSW Decarbonisation Innovation Hub.

My research sits at the intersection of data science and renewable energy. I develop open-source tools to benchmark net-load forecasting models, detect reverse-power-flow sign errors, estimate the impact of new tariff structures and forecast minimum demand. These tools help network planners integrate more solar without overbuilding infrastructure. I won the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at the UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering.

I have worked and studied in several countries. My work has been accepted for presentation at international IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) conferences in Auckland, Wuhan and Hobart. I am a Digital GreenTalents Award winner, which takes me to Germany for a three-month research exchange. I completed my first internship in South Korea, joined a student exchange programme in Japan and have volunteered in remote Papua and rural Fiji.

Before my PhD I worked as a Solar Engineer at AGL. I hold a BSc in Physics from Institut Teknologi Bandung (Cum Laude, Best Graduate) and an MEngSc in Solar Energy Engineering from UNSW Sydney (with Excellence). I hold the Databricks Data Analyst Associate, Data Engineer Professional and Machine Learning Engineer Professional certifications and the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification, am a Project Management Professional (PMP), and have passed Level III of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program. I was selected for the Consulting Leadership Development Program at McKinsey & Company.

I enjoy learning languages. Besides English, I speak three other languages and am learning two more.
